Why I Love Easter AAC Core Vocabulary Activities

Easter is a time for celebrating. There’s something for everyone to enjoy – gatherings, a big meal, Easter activities. Why I Love Easter is part of a series by Daniel Howarth that repeats the phrase “I love Easter because…”. Read this book with your AAC user then try these activities to target the core words “I” and “like”…
Easter Eggs
You can use hard-boiled eggs or chocolate eggs for these activities but I prefer plastic Easter eggs because they are less messy and re-useable. In fact, I use them year-round!

Easter Egg Hunt
Set up an Easter egg hunt (indoors or outdoors). Grab a basket and help your AAC user search for hidden eggs. Model “I see” and “I found” (e.g., “I see something… I found an egg!”).
Egg Toss
Stand about one foot away from your AAC user facing each other. Toss an egg to them. If they catch it, take a step back and have them toss it back to you. Keep taking a step back until one of you drops the egg.
If you have a group of children, put them in teams of two and see who can keep the egg toss going the longest. Model phrases like “I got it!”.

Decorate Easter Eggs
You may have memories of dyeing eggs as a child. Of course, you can dip eggs in food coloring but if you’re looking for a less messy option, download this free Easter egg coloring page. Decorate these 2-D eggs using crayons or markers, or add a bit of dimension using stickers, tissue paper or pom poms. Model phrases like “I like this one” and “I want a pink marker”.

Easter Food
What do you typically eat at Easter time? Many enjoy hot cross buns. Others grew up eating lamb, babka (sweet braided bread) or pascualina (a savory tart). My mom always made koulourakia (Greek cookies). Talk about what your AAC user and others might like to eat for Easter. Try some new foods if you can!
