How to Work Smarter (Not Harder) with AAC Users
Welcome to “AAC by the Book”!
The task of selecting vocabulary for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) users can feel overwhelming. Where do we even begin? How can we work smarter, not harder?
I’ve learned so much in my 13+ years as a speech-language pathologist. Early on, I focused HEAVILY on requesting. I taught kids to use “I want…” to ask for things. After all, what’s more motivating than getting something you want?
But communication goes beyond requesting. We greet each other, share ideas, ask for information, express emotions, and so much more.

And you know what? A child can get “stuck” on the phrase “I want…”.
Core Vocabulary
Core vocabulary refers to a small number of words that make up the vast majority of what we say. They are the words we use most frequently like “that”, “in”, “up”, “don’t”, “go”, “open” and “what”.
Core words can be used in a variety of ways in a variety of contexts…
- “open the door, please”
- “open your eyes”
- “the store is open“
- “I’m open to that”
- “go out on the open road”
- etc.
They can also be combined to communicate a variety of messages (e.g., “open that”, “open up”, “don’t open”). When you know core words, you can communicate a lot (work smarter, not harder).
Fringe Vocabulary
Fringe vocabulary is more specific to certain situations (think “helicopter” or “spatula”). These words are important too. AAC users should have access to vocabulary that allows them to communicate about a variety of topics like their recent field trip or favorite superhero.

Books are a great tool for teaching vocabulary. Picture books contain both core and fringe words within the context of a story and often provide multiple exposures to the same words throughout the book.
In this blog, you will find core word activities to pair with picture books, including:
- Toy/game suggestions
- Craft ideas
- Sensory activities
- Gross motor activities
- Snack ideas
- Songs
Whether new to core vocabulary or just looking for fresh ideas, follow along to find engaging activities for your therapy sessions.
