Spread the love: Valentine’s Day AAC Core Vocabulary Activities

Little Blue Truck’s Valentine by Alice Schertle is part of a best-selling book series. It features Little Blue Truck delivering Valentine’s Day cards to all his friends. This book provides the perfect opportunity to model the core words “give” and “take” using your child’s AAC system.
After reading the book, try these other activities to target “give” and “take”…
Valentine’s Pretend Play
Act out the story using a toy truck and toy animals. Pretend that the truck is driving to each animal to bring them something for Valentine’s Day. Model “give” and “take” as you play.

Valentine’s Arts and Crafts
Help your child make Valentine’s Day cards for friends and family. Decorate with stickers, glitter, stamps, tissue paper, pom poms, and more! Talk about who you will give them to.

Valentine’s Core Vocabulary Resource
My “A Card for Goldie” resource (available for purchase in my Teachers Pay Teachers store) includes a story booklet outlining the steps for making a simple Valentine’s Day card.
You can use the accompanying sequencing cards as visual supports as the child makes their own cards. This resource is loaded with core words like “give”, “make”, “get”, “put” and “on”.
Valentine’s Sensory Play
Make Play Doh hearts and flowers. Lay out pink and red Play Doh containers, rolling pins and cookie cutters. Take the Play Doh out of the containers. Model how to ask for items from each other (e.g., “Can you please give me the rolling pin?”).

Valentine’s Baking
Go around your kitchen and gather the ingredients to make sugar cookies. Model phrases like “take out the butter” or “take the sugar out. Measure the ingredients and lay them out in front of you. Ask your child to give you each ingredient as you add them to the mix.

Use a heart shaped cookie cutter and decorate with red or pink icing and red or pink sprinkles. When finished, talk about who you can share the cookies with. Pack up some cookies to give to family or friends.
Daily Routines and Activities
Take note of opportunities to model core vocabulary in your everyday interactions (e.g., “Let me take your coat”, “Give me a minute”).
