“Look” at These AAC Core Vocabulary Activities + Freebies

AAC Core Vocabulary Article
Look book cover

Look by Gabi Snyder is a visually stunning book that highlights the beauty all around us. It encourages the reader to notice patterns, colors and size in their environment. Look around and you might see stripes on a cat, or polka dots on someone’s jacket. It is the perfect book for teaching the core word “look”.

As you read the book, model “look” using your child’s AAC system. Create more opportunities for targeting this core word using these activities…

Patterns

Create patterns using different materials. Build a tower using blocks of alternating colors. Lay out buttons or colored tiles in a pattern. Make patterns using crayons or paint. Talk about what you see (e.g., “Look at that! We made a pattern!”).

“Patterns” Freebie

Download this free coloring page. Print two copies and color alongside your child. Point out the patterns (e.g., “Look at the stripes”, “Look, I see hearts”). Talk about the colors you are using and how your coloring pages look different (e.g., “Look at my paper… I used red and blue”).

Hide an item around the room and have the child try to find it. You might model phrases like “You’re looking under the table… It’s not there. Try looking on the shelf next”.

Outdoor Scavenger Hunt Freebie

Go outside and look for specific items using this free checklist. Work together to find all the items on the list (e.g., “Look, I found a stop sign!”).

Take turns giving each other instructions (this works even better with a group). The leader can start by saying “Look at me…” followed by an instruction like…

  • Raise your arms
  • Stand on one leg
  • Touch your head
  • Hop on one foot
  • Turn around

Snack

Sit down and have a snack together. Choose something with a variety of colors (like M&Ms) or shapes (like trail mix). Talk about what you see.
