Where Can You Find Activities for Teaching “Wh” Questions? Right Here!

Little Blue Truck’s Springtime is part of an adorable series by Alice Schertle. In this book, Little Blue Truck, drives around to see his friends and asks questions like “what’s new?” and “who’s there?”. This book provides multiple opportunities to target core vocabulary, particularly “wh” questions.
Consider your child’s level and the complexity of the “wh” questions (e.g., “why” questions are typically more complex than “where” questions). Use the pictures in the book to help your child respond and model appropriate responses along with the question when needed (e.g., “Who’s in there? Let’s see… lambs!”).
As you read the book, lift the flaps and model core vocabulary on your child’s AAC system. Then try these other activities…
“Whose Baby?” Freebie
As Little Blue Truck drives around, he gets to meet springtime animals like lambs, piglets and chicks. Download this free activity page. Model “whose baby is this?” as you match the big animals with their babies.

Who Am I?
Put toy animals in a bag or a box and play “who am I?”. Give your child clues about each animal and ask them to guess what it is (e.g., “I have black and white stripes. What am I?”).

What’s Wrong?
Critter clinic is a toy animal hospital. After filling each spot with an animal, open the doors one by one and say “Knock knock… Who’s in there?”. Model “what’s wrong?” and use the vet tools provided to treat the animals.

Who Took the Cookie?
Sing songs like “Who Took the Cookie?”. Model “who” on your child’s AAC system as you sing.
What’s Next?
Activities like baking involve following a sequence of steps. Choose a recipe to make together. Model “what’s next?” after each step.

What activities do you use to teach “wh” questions?
