The Dot + 6 Core Vocabulary Activities for “Make”

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds is an inspiring book that encourages children to uncover their creativity and take on new challenges. The main character, Vashti, says she can’t draw. Her teacher suggests starting by making a mark on her paper. Vashti starts by making a dot, then another, and then another. Her teacher’s encouragement brings out Vashti’s confidence, which she passes on to her classmates.
Model the core word “make” on your child’s AAC system as you read The Dot and during these activities:
Make Faces
Sit in front of a mirror together and make funny faces – happy, sad, angry, silly, etc. You will probably make each other laugh!

Play Doh
Make shapes out of Play-Doh. They could be long, skinny ropes or flat circles. Try hearts and stars or even letters.

Arts and Crafts
Recreate Vashti’s artwork using watercolor paint. Mix the colors together to see what new colors you can make.

Gross Motor Activity
Show the child how they can make shapes or letters with their body. They can make the letter “T” by sticking their arms straight out at their sides. If they raise their arms up higher, they can make the letter “Y”. Work with peers to make other letters like “H”.

Building Blocks
Get some blocks and build something together. It could be as simple as a tower or as elaborate as a castle. As you work together, you might make suggestions about how to build the structure.
Snack Time
Find a recipe and make something to eat. With just a few ingredients you can prepare instant oatmeal or Jell-O. Take it up a notch by adding your favorite fruits.
